FK Action Project Unit#2 " Becoming My Best Self " 3/19/21
This is my 2# action Project for who am I. In this class we discuss ourselves and our subconscious.
This unit is called dreams and doubt. In this unit we discussed what are dreams say about us.
We also discussed the connection between are beliefs and are doubts. For this action project I was supposed to build a
dream catcher with the elements represents are guiding question. My guiding question is “how can I improve”. enjoy!!
Since the beginning of quarantine I feel like I've gotten rusty, this dream catcher is representative of that. The outside of my dream catcher is wrapped in butcher's twine which represents that I've gotten rusty with cooking which is a hobby of mine. My dream catchers hung above my bed with a violin string representing I've gotten rusty with my music skills. The dental floss the inside of my dream catcher is woven with is representative of many different things but one of which is that I always forget to floss. It is also meant to replicate my subconscious inner voice. Allow me to explain. My subconscious inner voice has always been my mother. It sometimes tells me positive things. But some of the time it tells me what I'm doing wrong, or what I could do differently. This is represented via the dental floss because my mother has three main goals for me in life. One of which was to be happy. But also to have good teeth. My mother wished this upon me because of her constant battle with her dental health throughout her life. The third goal my mother had for me was to be good with money which is the “ There's always money in the banana stand” cardboard surrounding the hoop of my dreamcatcher. My mother is both my ego and my superego. The ego and superego are concepts developed by a man named Sigmund Freud. I would describe the superego as all the subconscious negative thoughts you have, such as “ am I really worth this promotion”. “ should I be doing this?” The ego regulates this. The ego is the guy telling you “well you have worked roughly double the work of your co-workers so yes you are worth the promotion”. In my case my mother is both my ego and superego because she constantly tells me what I could do differently in my head at least. Another Freudian concept that connects to the super-ego, and ego is the ID. The ID is the part of your brain telling you everything you're doing right, and your sense of pleasure. My mother sort of had another goal which is never to smoke. This is important because I have had many dreams no no no …. nightmares about cigarettes. This must be my ID telling me I will never smoke. Well my inner voice of my mother is critical, she's also very reasonable and very facts based. Speaking on the topic of philosophy I would say she's quite the continental rationalist. In simplest terms a continental rationalist is a person who uses only facts and evidence for everything they believe. The opposers of continental rationalists would be the british empiricists. British empiricists use science and evidence for what they believe as well but also factor in what could be. Allow me to explain. If I were to ask a continental rationalist “can a book fly?” they would respond with a flat out no. If I ask for an explanation they would probably discuss concepts such as gravity, and the lack of flying books in recorded history. On the other hand if I were to ask a British empiricist “can a book fly?” they would answer maybe. If I ask them “what makes you think that?” they will answer with something along the lines of “do we have any evidence that books don't fly?” My mother being a continental rationalist helps me improve. Which is the main idea of my dream catcher and my guiding question. “How can I improve?” The shape of the interweaving of my dream catcher is meant to represent me. The mustache at the top is a Reference to an idol of mine. Nick Offerman. he's a man who does not care what others think of him. He is a man who doesn't get in anyone else's business. He's a man who accepts himself. He's a man I strive to be.
