FK Action Project For Disease Unit#3 "Hepatitis A "

Hello reader, this is my action project for Disease class unit#3 at GCE Lab School. During this unit my class and I learned about the spread of communicable diseases. It is a fitting topic given the COVID - 19 pandemic. Speaking of, we learned about what a pandemic is and the difference between pandemic, endemic, epidemic, and hyperendemic. For this action project, me and my class mate created a video and, timeline of hepatitis A witch had several outbreaks right before the COVID - 19 pandemic occured. My classmate and I also gave a discription of hepatitis A's history and cause. This post is designed to be a pitch to the mayor of Seattle Washington ( you will see why in a minute, stick around to find out). Enjoy!!!!

In Washington State  between 2019 and 2021, Hepatitis A was running rampant. Folks who use drugs, whether with a needle or not, folks who have sex with men, folks who had been imprisoned, and any other folks who may have been exposed to a Hepatitis A outbreak. A man in King County who happened to be in between houses, so to speak, died after being hospitalized due to complications with chronic disease from Hepatitis A. Normally, Hepatitis A wouldn’t kill you but since this person was living with other diseases, he was more susceptible to the complications that resulted in his death.

An article from The Seattle Times states that thanks to the Hepatitis A vaccine, more than 3,500 folks between homes are now slightly safer. Even though they are vaccinated against Hepatitis A, there are still plenty of health issues that will hopefully be brought to more light so that what happened with Hepatitis A doesn’t happen with another disease.

The incubation  period of hepatitis A is approximately 28 days. Latency lasts approximately 2 months but 10% to 15% have symptoms for 6 months but the disease is rarely in the person's body though they are symptomatic.  (CDC)

Timeline for hepatitis A:

Video to pitch to the mayor:

 Video sctipt:

Ante (MORTEM): ohh no I got hepatitis A!

Larry: that's wack yo

Ante (MORTEM): I’m gonna have  joint pain, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or light stool, and fatigue!!!!!!!

Dr.Mcbasketball: actually karma  u don't have to worry. If you follow the 4 social behaviors and the 4 social expectations. Then u won’t have any of these gnarly symptoms.

Ante (MORTEM): oh wow no wayyyy

Dr. Mcbasketball: Let's start with the social behaviors you can do to save yourself and others from the dangers of hepatitis A.  The first social behavior is to GET YOUR VACCINE. The vaccine has an efficacy of 94%!!!!

 Ante (MORTEM): oooh thats crazy

Dr.Mcbasketball: The next social behavior is washing your hands after using a public bathroom. Hepatitis A is transmitted via fecal - oral route so WASH YO HANDS!!

Ante (MORTEM): That's bonkers.

Dr.Mcbasketball: The next social behavior is WEAR YOUR GLOVES. If you must touch food. Food is the most common way hepatitis is transmitted.

Dr.Mcbasketball:  Finally source your food from a place that has not been contaminated with hepatitis A. So you gotta  STAY INFORMED

Dr.Mcbasketball: Next let's talk about municipal procedures that your city is taking to prevent the spread of hepatitis A.

First the city of Seattle is offering  free testing to all citizens.

The city of seattle also implemented a mandate that requires all healthcare corporations involved in blood donation to test the donor for hepatitis A.

The city of Seattle is also mandating all commercial food manufacturing companies must test all their products and employees for hepatitis.

Last but not least the city of Seattle is offering gloves, condoms, and hepatitis A at - home rapid results tests.
