Bottom Feeder Burke

Hello reader, this is my Action project for art of rhetoric unit 3. This unit was about uniting people together. First we had to learn what divides people before we can learn what unites them. We looked at ways others have been united, particularly with policies. My classmates and I went on a field experience to two unique places that have worked to unite a certain population. First we went to the uptown neighborhood to meet with 48th ward neighbors for justice. This organization challenges the status quo in many ways related to housing, incarceration and police, and even methods of mental health treatment accessibility. Next we went to a place called Civic projects where my class and I learned about how Civic Projects works on ethical architecture projects that benefit the community instead of putting more money in their pockets. To wrap up the unit, I did a piece of rhetor - art about an issue I am passionate about. This is my art and my artist statement. Enjoy!

Artist statement:

I am a stand-up comedian and I chose to do a stand-up routine on the crimes of Alder. Ed Burke. The alder of the 14th ward in Chicago,IL. I chose this topic because the story of Ed Burke has impacted the lives of many people. Not just the people who live in his ward. Ed Burke is currently facing 14 counts of racketeering, bribery and extortion. He has also repeatedly used his political power to benefit his private law firm. He has also bribed housing developers in his ward in order to promote his law firm. He has also voted against ordinances that will directly improve issues in the 14th ward. Such as when he voted against a transit oriented development initiative even though 30% of the people in his ward rely on the CTA daily. Ed Burke has been using his power to harm Chicago since he went into office in 169. He is a perfect representation of how corrupt Chicago is. The corruption of Chicago impacts me in lots of ways. I have seen it in Chicago schools. I have seen it at my job. I see how it impacts my family. I knew that I wanted to use my art to speak about this issue. The message of my stand-up routine is to showcase how corrupt Chicago is. And that one man can have so much power for so many decades. My routine encourages the individual who can vote on the alder of the ward in Chicago they live in to do so. My routine also helps take away the fear. Knowing that a person who runs your city is a criminal facing 14 federal indictments is scary. But when it is being joked about but also brought to your attention, it raises awareness and removes a layer of fear. That is why I chose a stand-up comedy routine as the medium. It is an effective appeal to pathos, a person's sense of emotion. I want my art to invoke feelings of humor of course but also a sense of relatability. A feeling that the city they live in may not have great politics but other people have to deal with it too. My routine should invoke a feeling of unity. A feeling that maybe your next door neighbor hates that scumbag too.Maybe you and they guy across the street, and they guy across from him, may be able to make change. I used lots of repetition and anaphoras during my routine as a way of showing my passion for the issue and how genuinely shocking the level of corruption in Chicago is. I would like to see my art displayed on social media. A place where the most people will see it. Even though that means others who do not live in Chicago will see it, my art might invoke more jokes, more humor, more awareness, more connections. Even if Ed Burke himself sees it, even if it causes chaos. In the end it will invoke unity.
