FK Action Project for "Policy" Unit#2/3 " Was WW1 Legal?"

Image
Hello reader,  As part of my "Policy" class at GCE Lab School, I had the opportunity to explore the Executive and Judicial branches of the US government and their historical context. Our class had the opportunity to learn about the role of the consulting firm Deloitte in politics and to visit the Dirksen Federal Courthouse to better understand these concepts in practice. Inspired by these experiences, I chose to investigate the legality of wars throughout American history. I researched several historical conflicts, focusing on World War 1 and examined a Supreme Court ruling at the time to determine whether this war was deemed "legal" by the Supreme Court. Through this project, I gained a better understanding of the role of the Supreme Court in interpreting the Constitution and the laws of the land, as well as the complex interplay between the different branches of government and the changing social and political contexts in which they operate. Enjoy!   Was World W...

FK Action Project for Urban Planning "How About ..... A Roundabout?"

Hello reader, This is my action project for the "Urban Planning" unit 3 class at GCE Lab School. During this unit, I learned a lot about city infrastructure, the history of it, the math of it, and how it applies to almost everything. My classmates and I got to dive further into the topic of city infrastructure. My classmates and I got to talk with a real life city planner from houston. For this project, I chose an area of a city to redesign and build a model of said redesign. This is how it came out. Enjoy!  For my redesign I wanted to redesign an intersection that I use quite often. Its the 4 way residential/school zone intersection at Lemington and Quincy in Chicago, IL. To quote a fellow user of it they said "everyday being dropped off there is a battle" and I agree. Due to 3/4 of the streets at the intersection are one ways, it makes it very difficult to get back to a main street. So to fix this issue, I took insperation from the argyle night market witch has t...

FK Action Project for "Policy" Unit#1 "Letter To Danny K. Davis"

Image
Hello reader,   This is my action project for unit 1of a class at GCE called "Policy".  During this unit my classmates and I learned a lot about the history of legislative policy in the United States of America, and how to connects to the modern day.  Learning about thinking such as the Constitution, how different groups of people got the rights to vote, what the " Protected classes"  are, and times when ledgislation was used to opress people. We also learned a lot about the history of unions, even being lucky enough to have a group of union educators come to our class and run mock union/management negotiations to further teach us about the duties and benefits of unions.  For this action project,  I was assigned to write a letter to a person in the legislative body who represents me. And then convince them to vote yes or no on a current piece of pending ledgilsation. I chose to write a letter to Danny K. Davis (my US representative in congress), ...

Hello reader,  This is my action project for the "Urban Planning" unit#2 class at GCE Lab School. During this unit, I learned a lot about electricity, the history of it, the math of it, and how it applies to almost everything. My classmates and I got to dive further into the topic of electricity by inviting Dan, Kyle, and Tyler from ARUP, witch is a company that specializes in energy efficent building circuits. For this project, my partner and I created a functioning circuit using a circuit board kit. Said circuit contained 5 resistors, a parallel switch, and main switch. We then showed how each resistor on the model could represent an applience in real life and how much energy said appliances would save. We then built a cardboard cover for our curcuit to represent a home. This is how it came out. Enjoy!  Image of our circuit:  Battery Circuit, L.A.H., 2023 Image of our diagram:  Circuit Diagram, L.A.H., 2023 Circuit calculations:  Calculations, L.A.H., 2023 A...

The Manlet Bridge

Hello Reader, This was our 1st unit of Urban Planning called "Load". During this unit, we focused on truss bridges and their mathematical concepts, using only 75 popsicle sticks and glue to build bridges that could support 10 lbs and span a minimum of 18 inches. The bridge designs were completely up to us, and we were encouraged to be creative. This project mirrored the work of Mark Bennett, an urban planner for Chicago who has to work within resource constraints. Our efforts gave us better understanding of the dynamics of bridge engineering and how to apply mathematical concepts to our designs. Furthermore, we gained insight into the challenges faced by urban planners, who must successfully balance design creativity with material limitations engineering requirements. My bridge is called "The Manlet Bridge" because of it's size. The bridge that inspired the Manlet Bridge was the Somerset Bridge because it is the narrowest bridge at just 56cm wide. In order to ac...

Hello reader,  This is my final action project for "A Nations Argument". In this class, we learned about arguments that took place in the civil war. Which is most known for its fights not arguments. We also defined the difference between a fight and an argument. We also learned about conflicts between free and slave states. We learned about other things such as the constitution and its amendments How their arguments were presented, have changed over time, and the importance of rights. After learning about the constitution and historical arguments. I am now going to amend the "GCE constitution" and connect it to an amendment of the constitution. I also met with Andy Clarno, where we discussed our current course topics and relevant events happening around us, and listened to a yale lecture by David Blight surrounding a lot of our information on the civil war. This is the final product of this unit. Enjoy!  This is my Amendment to the GCE code of conduct student handb...

Hello, reader! This is my action project for Unit #3 of "Light, Sound, & Time." Throughout this unit, we have delved into the world of time, its measurement, and how we use time in our day to day lives. We began by exploring how time is used to determine the longitude and latitude at sea through GMT or the position of the sun at noon. The fundamentals of sundials, arc calculations, etc. With space as the backdrop, we dove into general relativity and time dilation. In a fascinating discussion, Taylor Hoyt shared his experiences of studying astronomy and cosmic phenomena with us. We also looked into the physics of pendulums and advanced math behind them. Overall, this unit provided a broad understanding of time, its measurement, and the exciting discoveries it can unlock in the world around us. For this action project I designed a clock using an alternative method of telling time. Enjoy!     Origin:  The history of humans smelling cooked food to know the time goe...
