FK Action Project for Urban Planning "How About ..... A Roundabout?"

 Hello reader,

This is my action project for the "Urban Planning" unit 3 class at GCE Lab School. During this unit, I learned a lot about city infrastructure, the history of it, the math of it, and how it applies to almost everything. My classmates and I got to dive further into the topic of city infrastructure. My classmates and I got to talk with a real life city planner from houston. For this project, I chose an area of a city to redesign and build a model of said redesign. This is how it came out. Enjoy!

For my redesign I wanted to redesign an intersection that I use quite often. Its the 4 way residential/school zone intersection at Lemington and Quincy in Chicago, IL. To quote a fellow user of it they said "everyday being dropped off there is a battle" and I agree. Due to 3/4 of the streets at the intersection are one ways, it makes it very difficult to get back to a main street. So to fix this issue, I took insperation from the argyle night market witch has these special kinds of streets that eliminate stop signs and traffic lights by replacing them with roundabouts; the sidewalk and road are on the same vertical plane. This design has many flaws but I believe that integrating roundabouts into school zones and residential areas could have massive benefits so my redesign inculdes replacing the intersection with a roundabout, this wil benefit the residents who use the streets everyday, and it will benefit the people being droped off at school and the park programs.  To also add to the space, at the end of Quincy (along with rezoning the street to be a two - way), I added a traffic light intersecting Madison. This will massively help with prevent traffic insedents, given how common they are where the street is. During this unot of Urban Planning my classmstes and I got to talk with an urban planner from houston where I learned a lot about how great alternatives to car infrastcure are but that in the mean time we need to make it as safe as possible. This also applies to SDG 11 (read other posts to learn more about what those are), SDG 11.2 "Disaster risk reduction", my redesign will help in creating a safer way of dropping kids off at school and SDG 11.4 "Sustainable transport", once again, improving driving safety will make our current transit system better for those who walk, bike, take the train, etc. Now enough talk, let me show you my redesign.

The  intersection currently:

Area of the space:

Radius of the round about = 42.419403421 ft^2

Quincy street: 30 × 300.67 ft^2

Total area: 14,673 ft²

Redesign visual:

Volume calculations:

Roundabout center volume calculation (trapezoidal prisim):

((6 + 5 ) / 2) × 4 × 3 = 66 cubic feet ( model: 66/15 = cubic 4.4 inches)

Yield sign pole volume (cylinder):

Pi × 1.1875^2 × 7 = 31.0109556079 cubic feet (model volume 31.01/15 = 2.06 cubic inches)

My model:

Model scale:

1 inch = 30ft

Conclusion:

Overall this project was very productive, I really want this intersection changed so letting my mind run free felt good. I didn't really run into lots of challanges, hope you enjoyed!
