Community Lunch is Definately A Munch
Hello reader,
This is my final action project for "A
Nations Argument". In this class, we learned
about arguments that took place in the civil war. Which is most known for its fights not arguments. We also defined the difference between a fight and an argument. We also learned about conflicts between free and slave states. We learned about other things such as the constitution and its amendments
How their arguments were presented, have
changed over time, and the importance of
rights. After learning about the constitution and historical arguments. I am now going to amend the "GCE constitution" and connect it to an amendment of the constitution.
I also met with Andy Clarno, where we discussed our current course topics and relevant events happening around us, and listened to a yale lecture by David Blight surrounding a lot of our information on the civil war. This is the final product of this unit. Enjoy!
This is my Amendment to the GCE code of conduct student handbook. The GCE student handbook contains a social contract listing all of the rules that GCE students must follow. Said contract also contains expectations and policies we must follow in the GCE building. It contains topics such as dress code, social interaction expectations, clean up and space treatment expectations, Etc. But the one I am amending is the GCE lunch policies.
"Food & Drink. Eating is allowed in approved spaces before school, during lunch, after school, and during breaks. Food and drink during class time is at the discretion of the instructor and may change depending on daily activities. An approved drink container can be turned upside-down without leaking."
"GCE contracts with a third-party foodservice provider, Gourmet Gorilla, to provide lunch for purchase to students, faculty, and staff. Gourmet Gorilla provides a menu of upcoming meals, which can be purchased directly by families through a designated online portal. Fees are charged directly to family accounts.
Families eligible for free or reduced lunch and identified by GCE will be notified by the School how to order food free of charge.
GCE has also brokered deals for students and GCE employees at a number of nearby restaurants.
Additionally, GCE provides modest breakfast and snack options to all students."
These are GCE's lunch policies.
These are the premises/thought process of its creation:
P. Students need a lunch period
P. The school provides an opportunity for students to get lunch off campus
P. The school also provides snacks in case the students cannot go out for lunch
P. 40 minutes is enough for students to go out
P. Eating during class time could disrupt learning
C: therefore, a 45 minute, off campus lunch where basic snacks are served is sufficient
Premise 1 and 2 are good but premise 3 is where the problem is. The school does not provide any food for the students; Kim does. So she has to bear responsibility for providing the students with "food". Usually this only consists of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, ramen, granola bars, and fruit.
Nothing but processed sugar.
Nothing with protein, healthy fats, or adequate micro nutrients.
A student who may be lower income who can not afford to get food at places surrounding the GCE building and can not bring lunch regularly.
Those students still deserve to eat something that will is nutritious and satiating
This means there are several contradictions to GCE's philosophy in many ways. We are required to get health and wellness credits so the school does feel the health of students is very important. Yet one of the most vital parts of that is the diets of GCE students, which the school puts no funding or resources into. This was not always the case, GCE's community lunch program solved this problem. The best solution would be to re- institute it.
Lets go over the premises again but fixing the contradictions along the way
P. Students need a lunch period.
P#: inorder for students to thrive in a learning environment, foods rich in protein and healthy fat are needed for mental clarity and satiety.
P. The school provides an opportunity for students to get lunch off campus.
P. The school will do community lunches prepared in the E lab done by a different cohort, once a week.
P. 40 minutes is enough time for students to interact with each other, go out to get food, and catch up on academic work if needed.
P. Eating in class will not detract from learning as long as work gets done and is not done in a distracting way.
C: Therefore, a 40 minute, off campus lunch, where nutritious and occasionally student prepared food is provided, and students have the freedom to eat whenever they choose as long as it does not interfere with learning.
GCE will become a more connected and healthy school. The students will work together better. The students will save money and get more work done.
My amendment grants GCE students something many would argue is a human right. Cooking, working with other people, and food safety/knowledge are skills every student has a right to learn. It's a skill every US citizen needs to have.
"Community lunch days would be advantageous to promote immunity inside the GCE space" - GCE senior

This amendment is not unlike the 6th amendment of the constitution. Said amendment states “The Sixth Amendment guarantees the rights of criminal defendants, including the right to a public trial without unnecessary delay, the right to a lawyer, the right to an impartial jury, and the right to know who your accusers are and the nature of the charges and evidence against you.” It protects and insures your rights. As previously stated, both food and knowledge of how to prepare it are rights of all students and my amendment defends that right.
