Why Universal Basic Income Should Be a Human Right
Description: This action project was for 9th grade SDG's ( sustainable development goals) class unit 1. For this action project I was required to write an essay on why a human need should be a human right and it must relate to either SDG 1,2, or 4. These include poverty, world hunger, and quality education respectively. I chose poverty ( SDG 1). My solution was UBI ( Universal Basic Income). I believe UBI should be a human right.
My mom was a child of seven, and my grandparents are very poor, evicted countless times, and almost never had clean clothes for any of their children or them. If they had Universal Basic Income I think they could've had it easier. I know what you're thinking this sounds like an ad for GoFundMe but it's not. This is a persuasive essay on why everybody in America should have access to Universal basic income. Universal basic income is an idea modernized by Andrew yang. Andrew Yang believes that everybody in America should make a minimum of $1,000 a month with no taxes. I believe this should be a human right because this would solve many other issues in poverty, world hunger and education. Such as if everyone had $1,000 a month They would be able to afford, and manage basic necessities such as housing, food, and Healthcare.
“The 5 most common jobs in America are administrative clerical work, retail and sales, food service and food prep, truck driving and transportation and manufacturing. These jobs comprise about half of all American jobs” Yang, Andrew. This was a statement made by Andrew Yang on Joe Rogan's podcast describing the most common jobs in America. And one of them was truck-driving and Manufacturing Which is currently being replaced by a large quantity of renewable energy and Autonomous self-driving technology, roughly 32% of all Truck manufacturing, driving, and transportation jobs will be replaced with robots.
Universal basic income falls under the physiological need of the Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a psychological theory that ranks the needs of people. It goes in order from physiological, safety, love and belonging, self-esteem, and finally self-actualization. Physiological needs include things such as shelter, food, and clean water. I believe Universal income will Kill many birds with one stone. For example, if a person is given $1,000, according to an article / game developer company named SPENT which is a game where you are given $1,000 and there is a barrage of challenges coming out at you then you have to use this money efficiently. Even in one of the most expensive places in the world where this game takes place, Los Angeles California it is still possible to survive on $1,000 a month.
And yes providing Universal basic income Will be expensive. And it will be… it will cost the government about 3 trillion a year. But this will be funded similar to the way that people who live in Alaska are paid money by the US government because of the large oil reserves that happen to be on their land. “ This would be enormously expensive costing about 3 trillion dollars a year that's way more than the government spends on any single program right now it's more than four times what we spend on the Pentagon” Yahoo Finance. Andrew Yang believes that most of all American jobs will be replaced by machines there for the machines will be racking in the money most which will be going to the government which will be distributed to the people in the form of basic universal income.
I believe basic Universal income should be a human right to everybody in America. I believe this cause this can solve many current issues in America such as starvation, lack of shelter, and Help open more small businesses. These very devastating problems have a very simple solution; Universal basic income.
