FK AP for Stories Unit#3 " Heroes"
For this assignment I was supposed to to interview a live person and a fictional character and compare the two. I did the singer Jewel and Meg from Trials of Apollo. This is my Unit 3 Action Project for Stories class. Let's talk about what Stories class is. This class is a humanities class at GCE Lab School where we learned about all different types of stories and how storytelling works. For this unit, we were working on the Hero's Journey. We learned about a man named Joseph Campbell. Joseph Campbell is the author of a book called “ The Hero's Journey” where he talks about the 12 stages of the traditional hero trope, examples such as Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Harry Potter, The Matrix, etc. The 12 stages include: the hero’s Ordinary World, Meeting the Mentor, Call to Adventure, Refusal of the Call, Crossing the Threshold, Allies/enemies, Tests and Challenges, Seizing the Sword, Dark Cave or Abyss, Ultimate Ordeal, Resurrection, and Returning with the Elixir. In this class, we went on a field experience to an art studio owned by a man named Armani Howard. Armani is going to paint a mural for the new location of our school, and we discussed the hero's journey with him and how it connects to our school and painting.
I chose Jewel as my real life hero because of how inspirational her story is. She's proof that you can do anything that you want if you put your mind to it. Also I feel like people in my generation and her generation don't really understand struggle too much. We don't know what it's like to have to use an outhouse. We don't know what it's like to have to fund your own tuition. Me included. I also just really respect Jewel as a person because she doesn’t take crap from anyone. No matter what position she was in she would never let someone disrespect her or tear her down. She is proof that if I work hard enough I can make my dreams of playing basketball professionally a reality. I chose Meg McGaffery as my fictional hero because of how much she is like Jewel. They both grew up in abusive homes, both are strong independent women that overcame their challenges and abusers. They both achieve dreams they didn't know they had if that makes sense, and they're both just overall badasses.
